THE EASIEST WAY TO FIND WHAT YOU NEED IN NZ

Shelter: a project by the Domestic Craft and Contemporary Art Group (knitterati) at Artstation.
Knitterati  and thier many friends and some generous strangers have spent the better part of 18 months working on the beautiful blankets for this exciting installation.
These wonderful knitted works of domestic art have now been donated to the to the Red Cross and will be used for refugees within New Zealand.
“shelter” was an enchanting structure that could be walked into by the viewers and surrounded them with knitted walls and ceiling. Light shone through the stitches thus emphasizing the nature of the materials used.
The idea behind the exhibition was to define a space that communicated the notion of sheltering and providing shelter.
The local community was asked to help make the materials for an installation with the motivation that the wider community would benefit from their efforts as the blankets would be donated to the NZ Red Cross when the exhibition closed. Both the process of making, the form of the artwork and its final dispersion promoted the idea that individual actions are not insignificant to the larger picture.
Every stitch was made with the understanding that the completed blankets would warm and comfort another, this was a community labour of love.
